Nishijima makes his return to a California ring for
the first time since his victory over Miguel Aquila in
March of 2002. The hard-hitting native of Tokyo,
one of the most successful higher weight Japanese
fighters ever, is a former WBF, OPBF, and WBO-NABO
cruiserweight champion. He brings an exciting style
into the ring as well as a desire to move one step
closer to a world title. Standing in Nishijima's way
is Cecil McKenzie, a local favorite who is known for
bringing the heat to each of his opponents.
McKenzie is a former NABF super middleweight
titleholder who has battled with the likes of former
world champions Michael Nunn and Frankie Liles.
Since moving to the cruiserweight division in 2003, he
is 2-0, with both victories coming by way of knockout.
In his last bout, on May 15, McKenzie stopped James
Monroe in four rounds.
In the Miller Lite Fight Night at The Tank co-main
event, San Jose's own Ricardo Cortes puts his 9-0-1 (6
KO's) record on the line against a foe to be
determined in a super middleweight eight rounder.
The 22-year-old has impressed local boxing insiders
with his skills and willingness to fight. He's coming
off a six round decision win over Victor Branson at
"The Tank" in March.
In the evening's only female bout, reigning WIBF
Americas Featherweight Champion, California
Featherweight Champion, WIBA Intercontinental Jr.
Lightweight Champion and IFBA World Featherweight
Champion Kelsey Jeffries of Gilroy, CA will be
featured in a six round fight. Jeffries, the
great-granddaughter of former heavyweight champion
James J. Jeffries, is not only one of boxing's top
female fighters, but one of its most active. Already
in 2003, Jeffries has scored decision wins over Para
Draine, Rolanda
Andrews, and Jo Jo Wyman. Her opponent for July
10 will be named shortly. This will be a non-title
bout.
Another unbeaten prospect, Arturo Quintero (7-0, 4
KOs), will also be in action on July 10 in a four
round super featherweight contest. Quintero is a
former resident of San Jose who recently moved to Las
Vegas, NV.
Making his professional fight debut will be Jr.
Welterweight Gary Owens from San Jose, CA. Owens
will take on Francisco Sanchez of Washington who will
also be making his professional debut. This Jr.
Welterweight bout is scheduled for four rounds.
In addition to the July 10 event, two additional dates
are scheduled for later in the year: September 25 and
November 6. All cards are scheduled to begin at
7:30 p.m. Dates are subject to change.
Golden Boy Promotions, owned by six-time world boxing
champion Oscar de la Hoya, has scheduled more than 30
fights throughout California in 2003 alone. For more
